Apple Pie Play Dough

Target vocabulary: Push, Roll, Cut, Smash, Soft, Squishy, Smelly, Red, Big, Little, and Nouns depending on
what objects you make with your play dough!

Talk to your child about what things you could make that are Red!
 “What could we make with our Red Play dough?” Things such as firetrucks, apples, hearts,
ladybugs, etc.
Talk about the smell and feel of the play dough.
 “Is it squishy?”
 “Is it soft?”
 “What do you think it smells like?”
Depending on the reading level of your child. Have them read the instructions for how to make the play
dough as you go! Ask them questions to work on recall and comprehension such as:
 What is the first step?
 How many cups of ___ do we need?
 What happens after we stir in the flour?
 Can you tell me what steps we took to make our play dough?

Homemade Apple Pie Play Dough
Ingredients:
 2 cups of flour, divided
 1/2 cup of salt
 1 tbsp cream of tartar
 1 tbsp oil
 1 cup of water
 2 tbsp apple pie spice
 1 tbsp cinnamon
 Red food coloring
Directions:
Add 1 cup of flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, apple pie spice, and cinnamon to a
large pot.

Add 15 drops of red food coloring to the 1 cup of water.
Add the colored water to the pot.
Turn heat to medium-low and stir well to combine.
Once combined, stir in additional 1/2 cup of flour.
In just a few minutes a dough will form.
Mix well, and be careful not to cook too long and burn the dough.
Dump the dough onto a cutting mat or plate.
Flour your hands and toss a small handful of flour over the playdough.
Knead the dough and work the extra flour through until it is the right consistency
and no longer sticky.
Your playdough is ready!
