Aquatic or Aqua therapy is used to provide a different medium to promote balance, movement, sensation, and range of motion with the children we work with.
Aquatic therapy is basically the same as land-based therapy, but we are able to create an ideal therapeutic environment by utilizing the natural properties only found in water such as buoyancy, resistance, hydrostatic pressure, and the various sensory inputs. The number one benefit is that it is fun and not perceived as work, thus increasing motivation and participation.
Other benefits include promoting increased exercise intensity, endurance, strength, mobility, muscle relaxation, balance, sensory responses, and reduced tone and spasticity. Most importantly, along with the benefits listed above, comes a sense of accomplishment, increased self-esteem, independence, and quality of life.
