Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic or Aqua therapy is used to provide a different medium to promote balance, movement, sensation, and range of motion with the children we work with in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or even Speech-Language Therapy.

Aquatic Therapy can be beneficial for any child who:
  • seeks sensory input
  • has increased muscle tone and/or spasticity
  • demonstrates decreased strength and mobility
  • struggles with balance
  • needs extra motivation to participate in therapy
  • may benefit from input to facilitate speech production
  • needs help with independence

Aquatic therapy is similar to land-based therapy, but in the pool, we are able to create an ideal therapeutic environment by utilizing the natural properties only found in water such as buoyancy, resistance, hydrostatic pressure, and the various sensory inputs. Due to the nature of Aquatic Therapy, kiddos often see their time in the pool as fun and not work, thus increasing motivation and participation!

The benefits of Aquatic Therapy can include promoting increased exercise intensity, endurance, strength, mobility, muscle relaxation, balance, sensory responses, reduced tone and spasticity, a sense of accomplishment, increased self-esteem, independence, and quality of life.
